Can I Curl or Straighten Hair Extensions?

Love to change your appearance but don’t want to harm it?

Indeed long, thick hair is always beautiful, and this is something that can be provided through extension. On the other hand, even if you or your hair stylist have chosen extensions of perfect quality, this doesn’t mean that your native hair will always look great – we all know about the so-called ‘bad hair days’. What's more, some events may require a special look, which means that sooner or later you'll have to consider some styling. But is it possible to do this with hair extensions? Let's figure it out.

Curling Hair Extensions: When Can You Do This?

Curling usually means a temporary thermal effect on the hair with the participation of tongs, curlers, and other styling devices. In the case of natural hair extensions, you won’t experience any problems with them – just do everything exactly the same as you did before with your native hair. At the same time, you need to be especially careful at the attachment points for your extensions: if the extension procedure was carried out using the hot method, you can involuntarily melt the capsules and thereby remove part of the extensions. As for permanent waving, it’s better not to do it at all: despite the possibility of the most accurate selection of hair for extensions, they may differ slightly in structure from your native one, which risks leading to unpredictable results.

However, what about synthetic hair extensions?

As a rule, most manufacturers of such hair don’t allow their heating above temperatures of 70-80 degrees Celsius. This means that thermal devices, the heating of which starts from 120 degrees Celsius, can melt them.
Moreover, such hair can begin to produce extremely toxic compounds, the inhalation of which can affect some allergic reactions and other negative health consequences. Therefore, it’s strictly forbidden to curl such hair (unless the manufacturer claims otherwise – in this case, you’ll need to carefully read the instructions for using this hair).

Straightening Hair Extensions: Is the Game Worth the Candle?
The same rules as for curling can be applied to hair straightening: if we are talking about using hair straighteners, in the case of natural hair, the manipulations with it should be the same as with your native hair. In the same way, you should avoid heating your extra strands at their fixation points so as not to damage or melt the attachment.

On the other hand, when it comes to permanent straightening, for example, with the help of keratin-containing formulas, it can only be carried out with a proper indent from the attachment point. As for synthetic hair, it cannot be subjected to either temporary or permanent straightening.

A Few More Words about Hair Care During and After Styling

To enjoy the quality of your natural hair extensions for as long as possible, always use high-quality brushes, styling tools, as well as thermal protection, which will keep the hair cuticle from drying out. Also, don’t forget to wash off the styling products well with a deep cleaning shampoo during the subsequent shampooing, and then apply a moisturizing or nourishing mask, the effectiveness of which you are 100% sure of.
We hope that now you know in which cases of hair extensions you can do hot styling, and in which you can’t, and therefore, will be able to style your hair wisely.
