Flat-Tip and I-Tip Hair Extensions: What's the Difference?

The correct choice of shade and structure of hair is only the beginning of your journey. After all, to achieve an impeccable appearance, you also need to understand what hairstyle you will have most often and, in general, how much you are willing to spend to maintain this impeccability for as long as possible. In particular, when you consider the most popular methods of hair extensions, you’ll definitely have a dilemma between Flat-Tip and I-Tip methods. However, each of them can bring a different result a client expects to see. Let's talk about the main differences between them in detail in our comparison overview below.

4 Parameters to Check

So, what are the key parameters that differ these two hair extension methods from each other? Let’s find out.

№1. Attachment way

As for flat-tip hair extensions, they have a small, flat, square-shaped nozzle at the top. For attachment to native hair, keratin capsules are usually used. In this case, the extension strand is placed within a keratin capsule, and then fixed near the roots with a special clip or heating device.
If we are talking about I-Tip, it doesn’t require use glues or heating tools. At the same time, such strands are fastened with the help of a looping tool: the extension strand is placed into the looping ring and then fixed by clamping it on native hair.

№2. Devices for attachment

Flat-tip extensions are attached using a special tool that fixes the flat tip of the strand to natural hair. Due to the high-temperature effect on the keratin capsule, long-term fastening is ensured.

In turn, the second type involves threading strands of native hair through a special device along with a strand using a hook or needle. Then this device must be tightly compressed to thereby ensure the reliable and long-lasting fixation of the new hair.

№3. Possibility to reuse extensions

Both types of extensions are quite often used in rebonding. With proper care, they can be removed from natural hair, put in order, and fixed again to smooth the difference between the attachment and regrown roots.

Please, remember that even the highest quality natural hair, regardless of the extension method you choose, can be used for rebonding no more than 3-4 times. Otherwise, your appearance will not be able to meet your expectations.

№4. Flexibility in different hairstyles

Flat tip extensions fit snugly against the scalp, resulting in a more natural blend with natural hair. On the other hand, this method often involves hairstyles with loose hair since, with some styles, these flat tips can be very noticeable.

Conversely, I-Tip extensions are better for creating high volume or high ones (like a ponytail) as their tips are almost invisible from any angle.
Flat-Tip and I-Tip extensions can add length, volume, and versatility to your hairstyle. The choice between the two ultimately comes down to personal preference, the desired hairstyle, and the method of fixing your hair stylist practices. Therefore, before choosing one or another hair extension method, it’s better for you to consult directly with your personal stylist.
